Am I Living My Life… or the Story I Was Taught to Live?
Sundays have a way of slowing things down.
The week hasn’t started yet.The noise of everything quiets for a moment.
And it’s often in that space that a question surfaces.
Am I actually living my life… or am I living the story I was taught to live?
Most of us don’t wake up one day and consciously decide to follow someone else’s script.
It happens slowly.
We learn what is expected of us.We learn what makes people happy. We learn which parts of ourselves are easier to hide.
Somewhere along the way, we start shaping ourselves around those expectations.
We become the reliable one.The easygoing one.The one who keeps the peace.
And over time, we can drift further and further away from the person we naturally were.
Not because we’re weak. But because we adapted. Because at some point, following the rules felt safer than questioning them. The tricky part is that many of those rules were never consciously chosen. They were formed through experiences, moments, and beliefs that slowly became the story we live by. And once a belief becomes a story, it quietly shapes how we move through life. How we show up in relationships. How much space we allow ourselves to take up.What we believe we deserve. This is why the same feelings can keep showing up in different situations. Different people. Different environments. But somehow… the same emotional pattern.
Often, there is a belief underneath it. A belief that was created long ago when we were just trying to make sense of something painful or confusing. And sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause long enough to question it. Not judge it. Just notice it.
A Sunday Reflection
Before the week begins, sit with this question:
Am I living my life… or am I living the story I was taught to live?
Then ask yourself:
Where did this story come from?
Is it something I consciously chose… or something I learned along the way?
And if that story wasn’t running my life…
Who would I be?
How would I show up differently?
What would I finally allow myself to do?
Sometimes the first step to finding your way back to yourself isn’t making a dramatic change.
It’s simply noticing the story you’ve been living by.
And realizing that you have the power to question it.
Want to Explore This Deeper?
If this reflection resonates with you, listen to the latest episode of Finding Her, where we explore how the beliefs we formed during survival can continue shaping our lives today.
And if you missed last week’s episode on The Method of Y, it’s the process I use to uncover the belief underneath the feeling. Visit my podcast here- https://www.podbean.com/ew/pb-8ahcp-1a66f78
Because sometimes the path to finding yourself again starts with a simple question.
